FIGLI LUIGI ODDERO
Piemonte
Barolo
The winery was founded by Luigi Oddero, a winemaker and a very inquisitive and cultured man who is deeply in love with his land, the Langhe. “A country gentleman”, as Mario Soldati described him in his 1975 interview for the book “Vino al Vino”. Luigi Oddero brings together a practical mind and a long-term vision, a perfect fusion of the energies of the past and the skill of looking ahead.
He is a charismatic figure, balanced between progress and preservation. He is always intersted in technical innovations, but he never loses sight of his family’s history, which began in the 1800s with his grandparents, who winemakers and wine merchants too.
Luigi, while busy experimenting with and planting international varieties, always gave preference to the Langhe’s native variety, Nebbiolo, and to all the other local traditional grapes, such as Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa. In more recent times, he kept pursuing Barolo’s traditional winemaking method by using large barrels.
Luigi was not only a winegrower. Driven by the passion for his land, he also grew hazelnut and peach trees and other typical fruits of the Langhe hills.
Today, after Luigi’s death, the winery is managed by his wife Lena and children Maria and Giovanni, who were named after their great-grandparents, with whom the winery’s history began. And so, tradition represents continuity, the common thread running through the past, present and future.
Our vineyards spread over about 32 hectares, 18 of which are planted with Nebbiolo grapes. Our approach to winegrowing is to practice integrated production or, as the French call it, reasoned winegrowing. Techniques and practices aimed at achieving sustainable and low environmental farming, which involves the non-use of herbicides and desiccants and the adoption, where possible, of organic methods, such as the use of pheromone diffusers that cause mating disruption of the vine moth. All this is done in order to protect our land and bring out the best the vineyards have to offer.
